Why patients come
A vascular surgeon is a specialist doctor who diagnoses and treats diseases of the blood vessels - the arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels - throughout the body, except the heart and the blood vessels within the brain, which are generally managed by other specialties.
Vascular surgeons use medical treatment, open surgery, and minimally invasive endovascular procedures to restore blood flow, prevent limb loss, and treat potentially life-threatening vascular conditions.
Walking pain, a non-healing wound, a new swollen leg, or a pulsatile swelling are reasons to separate artery disease, vein disease, and other causes.
Ultrasound and angiograms are useful when they change treatment. A consultation explains which report is worth doing.
Endovascular and open operations are discussed with their limits. Observation and medical care are also valid plans.
In diabetes, numbness and poor flow can hide a serious ulcer. Early vascular review is part of protecting the limb.

About the surgeon
A consultation is a chance to understand the circulation problem, the tests that would actually help, and whether a procedure is needed.

Patient information
Short answers are given first. They describe general patterns of care and do not replace an examination.
A vascular surgeon assesses and treats diseases of the arteries and veins, other than the heart itself and the vessels inside the brain. This includes varicose veins, peripheral arterial disease, aneurysms, deep vein thrombosis, dialysis access problems, vascular injury, and many complications of poor circulation, including diabetic foot disease.
Arrange a consultation for leg pain on walking, varicose veins with aching or skin change, a foot or leg wound that is not healing, new leg swelling, or a known circulation problem. Sudden severe limb pain, a cold pale limb, heavy bleeding, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness needs emergency care, not a routine clinic visit.
Common symptoms are twisted visible veins, aching, heaviness, itching, ankle swelling, and cramps. Some people have few symptoms. Skin darkening, hard patches of skin, bleeding from a vein, or an ulcer near the ankle should be assessed.
Warning signs include calf or thigh pain on walking that eases with rest, cold feet, pale or shiny skin, and wounds that heal slowly. Pain in the foot at rest, or a toe that becomes blue or black, needs prompt medical assessment.
A diabetic foot ulcer should be evaluated as soon as it is noticed. Do not wait to see whether it closes on its own. Fever, spreading redness, a foul smell, black tissue, or a suddenly cold foot needs same-day emergency care.
Peripheral arterial disease is narrowing of the arteries that supply the limbs, most often the legs. It is commonly related to fatty deposits in the artery wall. It may cause pain on walking and, when more severe, pain at rest or tissue loss.
Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg. The limb may swell, hurt, or feel warm. Part of a clot can travel to the lungs. Suspected thrombosis needs urgent medical assessment, especially if there is chest pain or sudden breathlessness.
The visit usually covers your symptoms, medical history, and medicines, then an examination of the pulses and the affected area. Tests such as a duplex ultrasound are requested only when they would change decisions. Bring previous reports and a list of current medicines.
